History
Community Foundation is a tax exempt organization that
provides stewardship for many individual charitable funds. With its specialized
services, Community Foundation of North Texas gives donors efficient charitable
fund administration.
Cleveland banker, Frederick Goff, created the first community foundation in
1914, governed by civic leaders, which would handle permanent funds for
charitably-minded citizens and distribute grants to local causes in their
names.
Community Foundation enjoyed economies of scale and offered the affluent and
modest donor alike the professional administration of a major institution.
Financial experts continued to manage the investments of principal, while civic
leaders carried out every donor's charitable wishes. Goff's idea spread coast
to coast.
In 1981, a group of community leaders met to assess the need for a community
foundation in Tarrant County. They determined the time was right to establish a
charitable vehicle in Tarrant County which would allow private citizens to
endow special causes and develop charitable reserves for the community. Our
community foundation was originally formed as Community Trust, a division of
United Way. In 1989, it became an independent incorporated public charity and
changed its name to Community Foundation of Metropolitan Tarrant County. The
first permanent fund was established in 1981, and as of December 31, 2006, the
Foundation's assets totaled over $129 million, and we have distributed more
than $83 million in grants to benefit worthy causes. In 1999, to better
represent the area we serve, the name was changed to Community Foundation of
North Texas.
The Board of Directors of Community Foundation provides stewardship for all
contributed funds. Serving without compensation, the Directors approve all
grants made, review investment performance and oversee the operation of the
Foundation.
